Chong is an easy-going nomad who travels with his wife, Lily, and a few other companions around the world playing songs and telling stories.

History[]

Chong and his friends meet Aang's group, who are on their way to Omashu, and offer to take them through a shortcut to Omashu known as the Cave of Two Lovers. None of them seem terribly bright and act somewhat unusually easy-going, which becomes a source of frustration for the kids, especially Sokka.

Personality[]

Chong is generally a very laid back and relaxed optimistic person who enjoys taking life as it comes. He likes to improvise and sing songs on the spot, and is sometimes oblivious to what is happening around him. In general, though, he wants simply to help others see the world in a different and at times more fulfilling way, even if they resist. Chong in particular is very mellow to the point he sometimes can't even remember the lyrics of his own songs and can be viewed as slack when it comes to doing important things like getting through the Cave of Two Lovers. He is a constant source of irritation to Sokka, but doesn't even seem to notice this. Chong doesn't use maps and rarely has an actual destination; he just "goes where the wind takes him." Chong's instrument of choice is a six stringed banjo-like instrument that has additional fancy carving at the neck and pot.

Trivia[]

  • Chong's name relates to the Canadian actor and musician, Tommy Chong, who was made famous in the marijuana-themed Cheech and Chong comedy movies.
  • Chong and his companions also appear to be the Avatar Universe's version of hippies.
  • He appears in a book of ‎Ready-To-Read Series, Love Potion #8

Compositions[]

Main article: Songs in the World of Avatar

Note: Most of these songs are only performed by Chong. The original composers are unknown.

The Cave of Two Lovers (composer unknown): "Two lovers, forbidden from one another, a war divides their people. And a mountain divides them apart. Built a path to be together..." (note: due to Chong's faulty memory, the next couple versus are not known) We do however know the ending: "And Die..." Chorus: "Secret tunnel! Secret tunnel! Through the mountain! Secret, secret, secret, secret tunnel!"

Don't Let the Cave-In Get You Down (composed by Chong): "Oh, don't let the cave in get you down, Don't let the falling rocks turn your smile into a frown. When the tunnels are darkest that's when you need a clown, hey! Don't let the cave in get you down, Sokka!"

The Love Within Your Heart (composer unknown): "Even when you're lost you can't lose the love because it's in your heart." Sjabloon:Avatar1
